Switch 2 Has Officially Surpassed the Nintendo 64 in Japan

Another milestone down for the Switch 2.

According to last week’s Famitsu hardware sales data, the Switch 2 has officially surpassed the Nintendo 64 lifetime sales total in Japan.

The Nintendo 64 finished its lifetime in Japan at roughly 5.54 million units sold, while the Switch 2 has now climbed to approximately 5.58 million units sold.

That’s pretty wild when you really stop and think about it.

The N64 was one of Nintendo’s most iconic systems historically, especially for players who grew up during that era. And now the Switch 2 has already moved past it in Japan relatively early in its lifecycle.

Honestly, this just continues to show how strong the Switch ecosystem still is in Nintendo’s home market.

What makes this especially impressive is that the Switch 2 is accomplishing this while also dealing with:

  • Higher hardware pricing

  • Rising component costs

  • A transitioning console generation

  • And an already massive installed base from the original Switch

The system is climbing fast, and if Nintendo keeps up strong software support, I don’t think it’s slowing down anytime soon - despite increase an increase in prices.

Switch 2 will overtake the PS5 in Japan soon as well. That will be interesting to see.
