Handheld “Beast” Mode Is a Game Changer on Switch 2

Handheld Boost Mode on the Switch 2 is everything.

I’ve noted in previous posts that the Switch 2 has already breathed new life into my Switch 1 library. And this new feature takes that to another level.

A perfect example for me was Red Faction: Guerrilla. That’s one of the games I was already playing when I picked up the Switch 2. On Switch 1, I played it in performance mode. It ran at a pretty solid 30+ frames per second, with an uncapped frame rate that hovered above 30 most of the time. Resolution-wise, it used dynamic scaling—roughly up to 900p, but it would dip depending on what was happening on screen. It was totally playable and I enjoyed it. But once I booted it up on Switch 2? That uncapped frame rate shot straight up to 60 frames per second - and stayed there! On top of that, the resolution stabilized at max pixel count (~900p). No more noticeable drops. No more fluctuations. Just a smooth, consistent experience.

That made a difference. And I have been having a lot of fun playing my Switch 1 backlog on Switch 2.

With yesterday’s firmware update, Nintendo has enabled Handheld Boost Mode on Switch 2.

I personally don’t play handheld mode much day-to-day, but when I do—especially when I’m traveling—that’s when it really matters; and this is where Handheld Boost Mode really shines. What Nintendo has essentially done here is allow Switch 1 games to run in their docked configurations while in handheld mode on Switch 2. That is HUGE! Instead of being limited to the original 720p handheld experience, these games can now run closer to their docked settings - up to 1080p with improved performance, depending on the title. So now, when I’m traveling, I’m not getting a down-clocked version of the experience anymore. Total game changer.

Handheld Boost Mode might not be the flashiest feature on paper, but in practice, it’s one of the most impactful upgrades the Switch 2 brings to the table. It improves your existing library, enhances portability, and makes the entire ecosystem feel more cohesive.

Simple feature. Huge impact.
